About the Department

North Andover Philosophy of Athletics

The interscholastic athletic program at North Andover High School is committed to providing a safe learning environment, where athletics are an extension of the school day. Our coaches are charged with the responsibility to teach the values of sportsmanship, confidence, tolerance, participation within the rules, physical well-being, leadership, organization, sacrifice, self-discipline, and teamwork. Through athletic involvement students will be respectful, accountable, loyal citizens of the North Andover community and will learn the value of a healthy lifestyle.

The Role of Athletics in a Student's Life

Athletic programs at North Andover High School are an integrated part of the school system’s total curriculum. Student athletes at North Andover High School are committed to academic and athletic excellence. Citizenship is demonstrated throughout the athletic department. Multiple teams have won Cape Ann League sportsmanship awards the past five seasons. All students are encouraged to participate each season. This past year our various sports programs attracted over 1,300 student-athletes.

Responsibilities of the Student Athlete

Responsibilities of a student athlete can be found in our North Andover Athletic Handbook. The Handbook also outlines policies addressing attendance, eligibility, chemical health and spectator participation, as well as the expectations for our student athletes and other topics.

Safety and Athletic Participation

The Athletics Department conducts training sessions for all coaches to ensure the safety of our student athletes. In addition, the department contracts the services of an Athletic Trainer who is available for consultations and who attends many of our athletic events. The Trainer uses procedures and protocols to ensure that all athletes have a safe experience in high school athletics. With the heightened concerns about the chemical health of athletes and about such risks as concussion in contact sports, it is important that athletes and parents understand the issues surrounding participation in high school sports.
